10 WEEK BLOCK COURSE / WEDNESDAY / 17 OCTOBER / 6PM – 8:30PM
Is clay calling to you?
Pottery wheel throwing is a tactile, calming, meditative & wonderful art form to explore!
“The fast wheel enabled a new process of pottery-making to develop, called throwing, in which a lump of clay was placed centrally on the wheel and then squeezed, lifted and shaped as the wheel turned.”
Your teacher: David Grillmeier grew up around clay & pots – With his father being a professional potter and ceramics teacher. David learnt to throw while studying ceramics at Avondale College, & later went on there to both teach practical ceramics as well as operating the ceramics studio – mixing glazes, recycling clay, building and firing kilns. With throwing & also hand building, David focuses on the forms possible with clay, but also in letting the clay speak about the process organically, with different surface textures & natural finishes. In David’s function ware, he aims for classic shapes & techniques, with pieces that work well & fit the user. David enjoys glazing that adds to a piece rather than the pot just being a backdrop.
What an incredible talent to have aboard the AMS team!
