David Grillmeier grew up around clay & pots – With his father being a professional potter and ceramics teacher. David learnt to throw while studying ceramics at Avondale College, & later went on there to both teach practical ceramics as well as operating the ceramics studio – mixing glazes, recycling clay, building and firing kilns. With throwing & also hand building, David focuses on the forms possible with clay, but also in letting the clay speak about the process organically, with different surface textures & natural finishes. In David’s function ware, he aims for classic shapes & techniques, with pieces that work well & fit the user. David enjoys glazing that adds to a piece rather than the pot just being a backdrop. What an incredible talent to have aboard the AMS team!
